91| Love Poem for Modest Three-Bedroom Ranch

Jim Daniels

You do not boast. You are not festooned.
You do not dribble outside the lines.
Amenities is a word we have never spoken
even in our secret whispery interior
decorator voices. You are more than
a ton of bricks. The modesty of your mortar
will not crumble. I have filled your bedrooms
with my kin, and you have taken them in.

You are not a political prop or movie set.
You are not a ranch with room to roam.
You are me. You are my home. I have filled
out forms as instructed, yet the bank threatens
to take you away. Their numbers are flimsy,
windblown. You and I, we hunker down.

Jim Daniels’ latest book of poems, Birth Marks, was published by BOA Editions in 2013 and was selected as a Michigan Notable Book. His next book of short fiction, Eight Mile High, will be published by Michigan State University Press in 2014. A native of Detroit, Daniels teaches at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
