Lisa Ampleman

My love is as a fever longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease.
— Sonnet 147

You’re the hectic in my blood,
the bacteria on my spoon,
the heated remnants of my appendix
curdling in my gut. But I despise

you. I ferret you out and lick
the bottom of your shoes—morsel
of a leaf, soil, salty rain—spit-shine them
clean. Like a raccoon

on trash night, with his little
people-hands, you can rummage
through my cans unimpeded.
I’ll take the antitoxin, bubble-gum

flavored, and sweat you out
the next time, or the next.

Lisa Ampleman is the author of a book of poetry, Full Cry (NFSPS Press, 2013), and a chapbook, I’ve Been Collecting This to Tell You (Kent State University Press, 2012). Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in journals such as Poetry, Kenyon Review Online, 32 Poems, and on Poetry Daily and Verse Daily.
