My love is as a fever longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease.
— Sonnet 147

You’re the hectic in my blood,
the bacteria on my spoon,
the heated remnants of my appendix
curdling in my gut. But I despise

you. I ferret you out and lick
the bottom of your shoes—morsel
of a leaf, soil, salty rain—spit-shine them
clean. Like a raccoon

on trash night, with his little
people-hands, you can rummage
through my cans unimpeded.
I’ll take the antitoxin, bubble-gum

flavored, and sweat you out
the next time, or the next.

Lisa Ampleman is the author of a book of poetry, Full Cry (NFSPS Press, 2013), and a chapbook, I’ve Been Collecting This to Tell You (Kent State University Press, 2012).
