104| For Fear

Beth Ayer

Lend me words, and words express
upon thy self thy beauty’s legacy

To me, fair friend, you never can be old.

That I may not be so,
Nature’s bequest gives nothing

and mine eye may be deceived.
Better it were, mad slanderers be frank:

Belie hot Junes, April perfumes,
shake still your ill-wresting loveliness.

Age hath motion, patience,
mad ears, proud wide heart

Tombed with thee, such bounteous largess —
lest you be alone in process of the seasons.

Based in Providence, Rhode Island, Beth Ayer is Senior Poetry Editor/Web Manager for the Found Poetry Review.
